HVAC Service Technician
Job Responsibilities
- Diagnose residential heating, cooling, airflow, electrical, and indoor comfort problems accurately.
- Perform repairs on heat pumps, air conditioners, gas furnaces, air handlers, thermostats, and related HVAC equipment.
- Complete scheduled preventive-maintenance and system tune-up visits.
- Clearly explain system conditions, repair options, and recommendations to homeowners without using high-pressure sales tactics.
- Provide accurate repair estimates and obtain customer authorization before beginning work.
- Identify legitimate opportunities for system improvements, indoor air quality products, maintenance agreements, and equipment replacement.
- Complete invoices, service notes, equipment information, photos, and customer recommendations accurately in the company’s field-service software.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and properly stocked service vehicle.
- Follow company procedures, manufacturer instructions, building codes, and accepted safety practices.
- Communicate effectively with customers, office staff, managers, and other technicians while representing the company professionally.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent practical experience.
- EPA Section 608 Type II or Universal certification. Universal certification is strongly preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the company’s insurance provider.
- Ability to diagnose and repair common residential HVAC systems with limited supervision.
- Working knowledge of electrical testing, refrigerant diagnostics, airflow, and basic combustion safety.
- Ability to use digital gauges, electrical meters, static-pressure instruments, and other HVAC diagnostic tools.
- Ability to safely lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in attics, crawlspaces, outdoor conditions, and other confined or uncomfortable environments.
- Willingness to work occasional overtime, evenings, or weekends when customer demand requires it.
- Strong communication, customer-service, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to pass any required background check, driving-record review, and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years of residential HVAC service experience.
- Technical school or accredited HVAC training.
- NATE certification or relevant manufacturer training.
- EPA Section 608 Universal certification.
- Experience servicing inverter-driven and communicating HVAC systems.
- Experience with heat pumps, zoning systems, indoor air quality products, and whole-home dehumidification.
- Familiarity with mobile field-service or CRM software.
- Experience presenting repair and replacement options in an honest, customer-focused manner.
